_ GRUB

最近オーバーフロー関係のバグがいくつか発見されていますが、大体は分かってたけど放置されていたものです。

ここはオリジナルからそうだったものなのですけど、アドレスを整数で扱うときにint使っている場所があるんですね。これはきっとErichの時代には十分だったのでしょう。だって、2GBまで平気なんだから、今でもこれを超えるシステムは少数派であること間違いなし。これをunsignedに換えちゃえば、4GBまで平気なので、大抵大丈夫。

でも次なる問題は、じゃあ、4GBを超えたらどうなるかです。これはi386に関する限り、ページングを工夫しないと4GBより上はアクセスできないので、 GRUBでは扱いません。どうせブートローダにそんなメモリは要らんでしょうし。だから、本当に扱うメモリの最大値とシステムに存在するメモリ量を変換するときにだけ、十分に注意すれば良いってことですね。そんなにこういうことをしている場所がないから、大した問題ではないです。

しかし、こういったサイズの問題を考えていると、 GRUB 2ではどうすべきか、再考した方が良いように感じられます。とりあえず、メモリについては「普通にアクセスできる」ところだけアクセスできれば良いでしょう。 GRUBには豊饒なメモリ資源は必要ありません。

じゃ、問題は何かと言うと、ディスクですね。ディスクはセクタ単位で扱うから、4バイトで数えても、 2TBまで行けます。数年前は十分じゃん！と思ってたけど、昨今のディスク肥大化を見ていると、不安になります。多分いい加減2TBでいいなんて発想はやめるべきでしょう。

よく考えたら、実は2TB突入が実現したら、 GRUB Legacyを追い出すきっかけになるかもしれん。動いている限り、人は同じ物を使い続けるもんな。

ちなみにここで言っている2TBっていうのは、ソフトウェアRAIDで合わせ技一本みたいなやつじゃなくて、ハードウェアのインターフェースのレベルから見て2TBってことです。だから、ハードウェアRAIDでBIOSが認識するようなのがあると、すでに十分やばいかも。
